Top 5: These Classics Love Winter!
Winter is quite a nuisance for many drivers. For some classic cars, however, that’s when the fun really begins. While modern SUVs—with their ever–larger dimensions and electronic aids—struggle to maintain traction, there are a few automotive characters out there that still tackle snow and ice in a wonderfully reckless way. From the Italian runabout to the Japanese rally machine to the French twin-turbo sedan: We’ve rounded up five extraordinary all-wheel-drive cars that cut a damn fine figure on winter roads. It goes without saying, of course, that we’re entering a parallel automotive universe where rust simply doesn’t exist.

1.
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution
The Lancer Evo is definitely not an insider’s tip. Its reputation as a rally icon has long been too legendary for that. But its turbocharged four-cylinder engine, sophisticated all-wheel drive, and motorsports DNA make it a real force to be reckoned with on snow-covered roads, even off the special stages. The early generations, in particular, still embody the unadulterated spirit of rally racing. A car that doesn’t see snow as an obstacle, but as an invitation.
Price: Approximately 23,000 to 55,000 euros, depending on the generation and condition.
2.
BMW 325iX (E30)
A BMW with all-wheel drive? That’s no surprise these days. But when the 325iX hit the market in 1985, things were quite different. With this model, BMW brought an all-wheel-drive version of the legendary E30 to the road. Under the hood is the refined inline-six engine, and beneath it, a permanent all-wheel-drive system distributes power to all four wheels. The result is a rather rare combination of classic BMW driving pleasure and winter-ready confidence.
Price: The Munich model typically ranges from about 15,000 to 30,000 euros. Vehicles in need of restoration can be found at lower prices.

3.
Fiat Panda
The Fiat Panda 4×4 is the best proof that you don’t need a big car for big adventures. While others pull up in heavy SUVs, this little Italian car plows through snow and mud with astonishing ease. Its selectable all-wheel drive, light weight, and compact body make it the perfect companion for snow-covered mountain roads. Plenty of comfort? Not a chance. Plenty of character? All the more so.
Price: For first–generation models in good condition, you should expect to pay approximately 7,000 to 20,000 euros.
4.
Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution
If you think of the Pajero as a comfortable SUV for family vacations, you haven’t met the Evolution yet. This Japanese off-roader was developed as a homologation model for the Dakar Rally and, as a result, boasts serious motorsports DNA. Its 3.5-liter V6 engine delivers about 280 PS, complemented by a sophisticated all-wheel-drive system and a strikingly widened body. An off-roader that prefers to attack the terrain rather than roll leisurely through the snow.
Price: Roughly 30,000 to 50,000 euros, depending on condition and history, though good examples are rarely available.

5.
Renault Safrane Biturbo
Admittedly, it wasn’t the first thing that came to mind, but the Renault Safrane Biturbo has truly earned its place on this list. Two turbochargers, six cylinders, about 262 PS, and all-wheel drive combine with French luxury. Based on the Quadra version, this luxury sedan was developed in collaboration with German specialists and was intended to give the established competition a run for its money. Today, the Safrane is an almost forgotten rarity. That’s precisely why it belongs on this list.
Price: Previous offers were around €20,000. Due to the small number of items and the rarity of such offers, it is difficult to provide a reliable price range.
