Together for the First Time—All 20 BMW Art Cars

This is a historic moment for automotive and art enthusiasts: For the first time ever, all 20 BMW Art Cars are on display together in one place. From July 29 to August 31, 2026, BMW Welt in Munich will showcase the complete collection under the title “BMW ART CARS – 20 ARTISTS, 50 YEARS OF INNOVATION. REUNITED AT BMW WELT,” highlighting one of the most extraordinary stories at the intersection of art, design, and motorsports.

Five decades of the BMW Art Car Collection in a single exhibition: What began in 1975 as an unusual experiment is now one of the world’s most significant collections of automotive art. The idea was conceived by French race car driver and art auctioneer Hervé Poulain and Jochen Neerpasch, then head of BMW’s motorsports division. At that time, artist Alexander Calder transformed a BMW 3.0 CSL into a “rolling sculpture” that competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

What was initially conceived as a one-time event evolved into a unique fusion of creativity, technology, and automotive culture. Since then, artists such as Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Jeff Koons, and Olafur Eliasson have transformed vehicles into works of art, continually opening up new perspectives on the automobile.

The exhibition at BMW Welt follows a unique concept: The tour begins with the most recent works and proceeds chronologically back to the collection’s origins. Highlights include Julie Mehretu’s 2024 BMW M Hybrid V8 Art Car and John Baldessari’s BMW M6 GTLM. At the end of the journey, visitors will find the collection’s first milestone: Alexander Calder’s 1975 BMW 3.0 CSL. The exhibition showcases not only the evolution of the BMW Art Cars but also the history of BMW itself: from classic race cars to legendary models like the BMW M1 and the BMW Z1, all the way to the modern BMW M Hybrid V8, it illustrates just how closely design, innovation, and technical development are intertwined.

The exhibition at BMW Welt also marks the conclusion of the BMW Art Car World Tour, which has previously taken the collection to more than 30 countries. For 30 days, visitors in Munich will have a rare opportunity: all 20 “rolling sculptures” can be experienced together for the first time.
