From 55 to 500 hp – Bertone presents the new Runabout.
On October 29, 1969, Bertone presented the Autobianchi A112 Concept, better known as the “Bertone Runabout”, at the Turin Motor Show. Over 50 years later, this iconic model returns as the first vehicle in the new “Bertone CLASSIC” series. In a digital preview, Bertone now shows how the new RUNABOUT model is being reinterpreted for today as a tribute to the original design – with a clear focus on performance.
The model, designed for 500 hp and purist sportiness, is produced in limited series and combines the charm of the neo-retro design with an advanced, high-performance technology package.

The new edition of the RUNABOUT comes in two versions, firstly as an open Barchetta version for a direct experience of nature, and secondly as a Targa version with a removable roof.
The legendary 1969 Runabout was based on the mechanics of the Autobianchi A112, which in turn used the platform of the FIAT 128. With a 1.1-liter engine and 55 hp, the Runabout was originally intended as a lightweight sports car, but never went into series production. Nevertheless, the concept was influential: it inspired the later FIAT X1/9 and provided important design elements for the Lancia Stratos.
“The new Bertone RUNABOUT is more than a design object – it is a tribute to the Italian tradition of spectacular sports cars and the pure joy of life”
Andrea Mocellin, Head of Design Bertone
The new Bertone RUNABOUT, on the other hand, relies on a powerful V6 engine that delivers 500 hp – a significant increase in performance compared to its historic predecessor, without losing any of its character. As back then, the concept is designed for light-footedness and dynamic handling. While the driver’s cabin offers space for two passengers, they sit almost shoulder to shoulder in an exclusive interior that now also includes side doors for easy access – a detail that was missing from the original.
Limited series and the premiere of the Bertone CLASSIC Line
In keeping with Bertone tradition, the new RUNABOUT is produced in a limited edition and places particular emphasis on perfect craftsmanship. At the same time, Bertone is celebrating the launch of the “Bertone CLASSIC Line” with this model, which is dedicated to the brand’s most famous design classics.

Production of the Bertone RUNABOUT is scheduled to begin in mid-2026, with a starting price of 350,000 euros net.
