Allgemeine Beschreibung & Historie des Models

The 300SE (W112) models were impressive cars with remarkable features compared with the (W111) series. The standard specifications included a light-alloy engine with fuel injection (similar to the 300SL engine) with a displacement of three litres, a four-speed automatic transmission, power steering, air suspension, a dual-circuit brake system with disc brakes on the front and rear wheels as well as a locking differential. The additional chrome trim consisted of a chrome strip running in the longitudinal groove from the headlamps all the way to the rear lights, as well as of distinctive trim strips on the front and rear wheel arches.

Whilst the sedans were strikingly styled with rear fins, the Coupé and Cabriolet variants presented a much rounder, smoothed and streamlined shape.

Considerably more parts had to be made by hand as the Coupé and Cabriolet, did not share a single body part with the four-door model, which was reflected in the price being twice as high as a comparable sedan. Today the difference is much higher.

Only 708 examples of the Cabriolet were built, so it is therefore now a very rare and desirable vehicle. Its former base price without options was 35,000 Deutschmarks; for that amount one could have bought also 6 or 7 VW Beetles.

Fahrzeugspezifika

The vehicle was produced in 1962 and delivered to a dealer in the USA, but only first registered in 1967. The car was on exhibit in the dealers show room for that time. This could be due to its incredible price of the equivalent of 7 VW.   The car returned to Germany in 2006 for a total restoration. An identity card from 1962 and a Californian title document are available.

Auto, Motor und Sport, Germany, no. 7/1962:

“This year, something new is shown in Geneva – no sensations but at least a couple of surprises. The latter include the Coupé and Cabriolet versions of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SE – a combination of the engine and chassis from the 300 SE with the bodywork of the 220 SE Coupé and Cabriolet, respectively. With its 160 hp three-litre injection engine, automatic transmission, power steering, air suspension, disc brakes on all four wheels, locking differential and exclusive appointments, this car is clearly the ultimate in modern automotive engineering.”

The 300SE returned to Germany in 2006 and was meticulously restored from 2006 to 2012. The restauration was overseen by Arthur Bechtel, a leading Mercedes-Benz expert, and the work was carried out by marque specialists. The current owner purchased the car in 2015 and had the car further detailed to factory new condition and the air suspension valves were overhauled by marque specialist Schwarz in Bavaria.

Our team had the chance to extensively test drive the car throughout Bavaria, as you can see in our movie trailer. The car drives exactly as it should and is an immense pleasure to tour through town and country.
